Infection ControlInfection control within Healthcare Environments has become a priority over recent years with the rise of superbugs like MRSA. Two of our main healthcare ranges (Premium Metal & Ultimate Plastic) have specially designed features to help prevent the spread of infection in this type of environment. Features such as: Off the wall design: these products are designed to stay clear of the wall preventing damage to the wall. Damaged sections of walls are extremely hard to clean and can harbour bacteria. Silent Closing Option: This option reduces the speed that the lid closes making the operation of the bin quieter but it also reduces any displacement of particles from the bin into the air and surrounding environment. Anti-Microbial Paint Option: This option adds an anti-bacterial element to the paint within our products which helps prevent the spread of bacteria. Waste ManagementHere at EHPL we have worked closely on many occasions with various companies and NHS trusts that have current Waste Steam or are introducing new one. We offer a Waste Bin Audit (this phrase will link to Bin Audits page in Services sub menu) service and we can make the colours of our sack holders/clinical waste bins to match the waste stream requirements. We can also offer Labelling which can be attached to the bins. Clinical Waste Regulations (HTM 07-01)The “Health Technical Memorandum 07-01:Safe Management of Healthcare Waste” are Government guidelines to best practice guide to the management of healthcare waste. EHPL assisted in the review of HTM07-01 at the consultation draft stage. Gary Campbell, EHPL’s managing director, explains “We were asked to comment on the changes that were being proposed. To be honest, most of them made sense and were just an extension of what has become best practice in the industry since the original HTM was introduce five years ago. “As we now know, the main changes that waste managers in the NHS have to look out for are the new colour coded waste streams. “It’s fair to say that the first reaction throughout the NHS will probably be ‘why the changes’ in the same way as the orange and ‘tiger stripe’ streams were greeted in 2006.
However, by implementing the changes, large cost savings can be achieved along with some other less obvious but just as important This procedure can save a substantial amount of money and has now been utilised by a number of our customers.” One example is The Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust. In early 2010, the trust faced having to replace over 1,500 bins to meet the requirements of HTM 07-01. Outlining the changeover, Dave Reavy, the trust’s logistics manager, explained: “We spoke to EHPL about what could have been a large order for new bins but they turned it down. They told us that we only needed to change the lids. “Until they told us, we didn’t realise we could. From what could have been a £200,000 spend we moved to around £70,000 for the whole project.” Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS have also implemented a HTM system using EHP bins after a successful Waste Segregation pilot “We’ve saved £92,000 in clinical waste in the first year. The business case had a two-year payback and we’re on course to achieve that in 18 months.” Pauline Lewin, the trust’s director of estates and facilities.“ For me it’s all been about improving quality, reducing risk, reducing costs, and improving the environment, and the staff have embraced the changes.” More on these can be found on our “Case Studies” The UK’s Waste bin and Sackholder Colour Coding Guide can be found here: (link to the Colour Coding sub menu page from Products) If you are interested in implementing HTM07-01 or a new Waste management system and are interested in our products and advice please “contact us”
